Ana Cervantes "… An emotional, physical player … with extraordinary touch" (Newark Star-Ledger)
"Latin American music … at a linguistic level of understanding … Cervantes thoroughly understands the Spanish idiom." (Classical New Jersey)
Cervantes – awarded a Fulbright-García Robles award to go to México for the year 1999-2000 -
has won plaudits from presenters, audience members, and the press, for her approachable performance style as well as for her vibrant interpretations.
"We´re part of a continuity of musical expression … new music and old are mutually illuminating"… Cervantes performs and premieres contemporary works of US, Mexican, and
Latin American composers, pairing them gracefully with the "standard" repertoire. She demonstrates her many dimensions by performing music from the Northern and Southern
hemispheres, from the Old World and the New, from yesterday and today.
Committed to growing community relationships through her concert performances, Cervantes
prefers to spend time in the community – interacting with students, playing for the elderly - prior to her performances, rather than materialize for a concert and vanish immediately thereafter
. ¨With imagination, we can craft ways to reach beyond the standard concert-hall audience. As artists we MUST be community-based so that everyone can share the music."
She is especially sympathetic to young people of Latino origin growing up in the US, many of whom are detached from their rich heritage through the necessities of making their way in a new country.
Soloist and collaborative artist… As founding member of The Chamber Music Co-op, Cervantes has been a vital part of designing programs described by the Newark Star-Ledger as
"spanning centuries without losing cohesiveness." Classical New Jersey has said, "Any program put together by Ana Cervantes is sure to be interesting and is always enhanced by her charming
introductory remarks..." In addition to earning praise as a soloist, Cervantes has been described as "a perfect accompanist." Collaborating with poets in performance, she makes a space in which
the spoken word - in a variety of languages - joins its voices with music. Through such imaginative programming, Cervantes brings to life an infinite variety of musical styles and expressions.
