Action/Inaction

Action/Inaction – Action/Inaction is a composition that was written for mandolin, percussion, and computer-generated tape.  I wrote this work for percussionist Tom McGrath (who played with me in the group Minus Ted in New York City) and I.  This work explores the use of extended instrumental techniques.  The challenge was to perform it “live” without any type of processing while creating a sonic texture that blended with the computer-generated tape in a seamless manner. The tape part consists of granular synthesized fragments of the wind, which I recorded outside my office window at Columbia University, and samples I made while playing a pennywhistle.  This is one of the many pieces I have written that uses folk instruments or a traditional folk tune as the basis for a computer music composition.  This work was performed at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre on a Computer Music Center concert in 1998.
