Alexandre Lunsqui was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He studied at Campinas University, University of Iowa, and Columbia University. His main teachers were Tristan Murail, Jeremy Dale-Roberts and Fred Lerdahl. In 2003, he took part on the year-long course in composition and computer music at IRCAM, where he worked with composers Brian Ferneyhough, François Bayle, and Jonhathan Harvey. In Brazil, he co-founded the In Sanum Ensemble, a group devoted to creating chamber music, multimedia works, and improvised music ranging from jazz to contemporary improvisation. He has participated in festivals such as Darmstadt, Musica Nova, Creative Music Festival, Music at the Anthology, Are you Brave(?), Boston Contemporary Music Week, Yellow Barn,  and Resonances. Recent awards include the first prize in the 2002 Brazilian Chapter Percussive Arts Society composition competition and the 2003 Virtuoso Scholarship Award given by the Brazilian ministry of culture. Recent commissions include works for the Due East, Duo Continuo (Freiburg), Columbia Sinfonietta, and a new work for six berimbaus commissioned by percussionist Greg Beyer. Recent performances include the English première of “…tornando-se…” for solo piano, the French première of “Carretéis” for ensemble, the American premières of “Contours…Distances” for piano, Orbit-Giro for nine instruments, and Entresons for six percussions, plus performances with the Ensemble CounterInduction and Due East.  He has been invited to participate in the Western Illinois University New Music Festival in March, 2006.
