Credits:

This course, for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, is intended to develop understanding of tonal compositions and of theoretical concepts that apply to them, through study of specific works in various forms and styles. No method of analysis will dominate; attention will be given to the coordination of musical action on different time scales, to relations between imaginable compositional strategies and potential listening experiences, and to the problems of communicating analytical ideas in useful ways. Class discussion of assigned pieces will be followed by written analyses of similar pieces, with the length and independence of these projects increasing through the term.
