Whitney Slaten is a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at Columbia University. His forthcoming dissertation examines the relationships between technological and social examples of fidelity within the context of professional live sound reinforcement engineering. This research contributes to scholarship about music, technology, liveness, and labor studies. Slaten has worked as a live sound reinforcement and recording engineer in New York City and has taught courses about sound engineering. Whitney has worked in the New York City jazz and world music scene as a saxophonist, performing with artists including Babatunde Olatunji and Clark Terry, as well as ensembles under his own direction.
