Before undertaking his PhD, he completed both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music at Royal Holloway, University of London. As an instructor, Joshua has thoroughly enjoyed teaching the Core Curriculum’s Music Humanities course since 2014.

Joshua’s research analyzes various pedagogical and scientific arenas in which musical expertise has been defined and produced, with a focus on German music conservatories and the psychological sciences in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Supported by a research fellowship from the DAAD, his dissertation analyzed how the development of German conservatory training reshaped classical musicians’ practices and discourses of human musicality. Joshua has presented work from his dissertation project in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Finland, and will soon be publishing part of his dissertation research in the Journal of Musicology.
