Howard S. Shanet, 1918-2006

The Department notes with great sadness the passing of our colleague, Professor Emeritus Howard S. Shanet, on June 19 in New York. An alumnus of Columbia College (BA 1939) and GSAS (MA 1941), he joined the faculty in 1953, was department chair during the 1970s, and then became the University's first Director of Music Performance. He was known for adventurous programming at McMillin Auditorium (now Miller Theatre). He was well known for his book Philharmonic: A History of New York's Orchestra (Doubleday, 1975), and his Learn to Read Music (Simon & Schuster, 1956) was frequently reprinted. Several departmental events this year will honor Prof. Shanet's memory. Details will be posted.
