An MPP group-in-residence, the Moebius Ensemble is an American chamber music group that has been actively promoting cross-cultural exchanges with countries of Eastern and Central Europe. They write:
"Since our inception in 1998, we have produced noteworthy concerts in many cities. We have brought American music to audiences in former Soviet-bloc countries, and we have engaged musicians who are suffering financial hardships to perform in concert with us."
The group’s first tour as an ensemble, in May-June 1999, featured performances in the festivals Musica Nova Sofia (Bulgaria), International Arts Festival (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), and Days of American Music (Saint Petersburg), plus a concert at the Moscow Conservatory. The group’s residencies in these cities included concerts, lectures, seminars, and symposia. The theme of this tour was American music which was all but unknown in those parts of the world. In addition to performing a chamber music concert in Saint Petersburg, Moebius engaged the Saint Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra to perform a concert of Russian and American music. Russian conductor Ravil Martinov led the concert. Moebius Artist Director Deborah Bradley was soloist in Remembrance of a People, a Holocaust memorial composition by Moebius Artistic Advisor Jonathan Kramer.
