MPP LESSON POLICIES
Once
you have been notified by the MPP of your placement in lessons with a
teacher, register under INSTRUMENTAL INSTRUCTION, and check the
Directory of Classes for the correct section number listed under your
instructor’s name. Lesson students may only register for ONE credit.
There are 12 half-hour lessons per semester, or 6 one-hour lessons
every other week. Once you are placed with an instructor, you must
register immediately, then print out proof of your having registered.
Contact your instructor to schedule a first meeting WITHIN THE SECOND
WEEK OF CLASSES and give that printed proof of registration to your
instructor. If you fail to do all of the above, you may be dropped from
lessons. Be on time for your lessons! You must give your Instructor
24-hour notice before missing a lesson, otherwise you forfeit your
right to make up that lesson. All lessons must be completed within the
semester. Private lesson students are required to attend at least one
of the MPP end-of-semester concerts as an audience member. You are only
expected to perform if you are in a chamber or jazz group. An
end-of-semester recital for private lesson students is optional. If
you’d like to arrange this, contact your Instructor and the MPP office
for help. (JAZZ ONLY) – You must be enrolled in a jazz ensemble to
qualify for private instruction. Remember to audition for the Rapaport
Prize in March, which can award you funds to study at ANY summer music
festival in the world! For more info, email mpp@columbia.edu.
