The word vortex brings to mind images of the movement of particles round an axis, or of whirling masses of fire, water or air. The title of the piece, although conceived of after the composition had been completed, reflects the movements of energies, particularly the twirling and swirling motions prevalent in the piece, that produce an almost visual effect for the listener. Characteristic of the acousmatic medium in which it was composed, the piece transports the listener into a new and unique sound world, where sound-objects of unknown and indeterminate origins move about.
