Jazz Vocal & Instrumental Auditions

Directed by Professor Chris Washburne, the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program offers both undergraduate and graduate students jazz performance opportunities and private lessons. There are a variety of jazz ensembles, both large and small, instrumental and vocal,that cover a wide range of musical styles.  All ensembles perform at an intermediate level or higher and require some past jazz experience. The jazz ensembles include:
    Big Band
    Small Groups
    Jazz Vocal Ensemble
    Latin Jazz

Auditions for the Jazz Performance Program are held in the Fall semester only.  Please be sure to sign up for a time slot ahead of time.  Audition sign up sheets will go up on the bulletin board outside of 618 Dodge Hall in August.All auditions will take place in 112 Dodge Hall (enter from College Walk).

Instrumental
Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 4:00 – 10:00 PM
Friday, September 11, 2009 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM

Vocal
Friday, September 11, 2009 from 10:00AM – 2:00 PM


Audition Requirements:

•    Instrumentalists should prepare two jazz standards and be ready to improvise if asked.

•    Jazz Vocal Audition Requirements:
      1.  Please prepare two selections to show interpretative (improvisation optional) abilities.  Please provide a clear lead sheet to the accompanist (a pianist is provided).  Only one selection may be requested at the audition.

2.  A brief ear training assessment will be done for placement purposes only.
     a.  interval recognition
     b.  chord recognition
     c.    repetition of melodic phrases and rhythmic patterns


* Please note: you must participate in a jazz ensemble in order to be considered for private lessons.  Do not register for lessons until you have received confirmation of placement.
