Director of Graduate Studies: Memo to all Music Grad Students, May 2012
Matthew Shechmeister's Wired Magazine article (and photos) on the history of microphone technology is fascinating, connected to a story on the return of ribbon microphone technology that's also worth a read.
It really is worth remembering that audio recording is only a bit more than a century old. It has changed so much about the way we hear and conceptualize "music."
Get Involved With Columbia Music Students Making a Difference!
As we begin the new academic year, the Department of Music would like to call our students' attention to two initiatives, led by your fellow students, to bring musical experience and enrichment into the lives of our community's public schools. If you're interested in putting your musical energies into this rewarding service, here are two opportunities to do so.
Big news over the summer. While many students and faculty were away, our decade-long loan/sale arrangement with a major New York piano retailer came to an end as that dealer shut its doors. We've had the benefit of more than 30 new (mostly Yamaha) pianos placed annually at Columbia on loan for 9 years, in conjunction with an annual sale event to which alumni have been invited.
With the closing of our retail partner, that sale will no longer happen. If you're an alumnus/a interested in purchasing a piano for your home, or someone who was looking forward to this year's piano sale, please see below for some important information.
